Apple had filed two different suits with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against Nokia and HTC, to appeal against the alleged infringement of Apple's smartphone patents.
In April, the ITC recommended that the case against the two mobile phone giants should be consolidated, and this proposal was supported by Nokia and HTC. Apple protested, since it was of the view that the consolidation would aid the defendants by creating complexity. The consolidation had a clear advantage for Nokia and HTC since they could combine forces and share ideas, to mount a joint offensive on Apple.
The case took a dramatic turn in June, 2010, when Nokia announced that it had managed to crack a deal with Apple, with hundreds of millions of dollars being agreed to be paid by Apple for use of Nokia's Intellectual Property (IP).
And, in the initial ruling given by the ITC Judge Carl Charneski, on 15th July, 2011, ruled that HTC was guilty on two counts of infringement of Apple's patents. This ruling led to a huge drop in HTC's stock prices.
The main reason for such different fates lies in the fact that Nokia possesses a vast patent portfolio and on the other hand, HTC is a fairly new company without much IP resources. HTC also works closely with Google, an arch rival of Apple.

The financial results of Nokia for the second quarter of 2011 are going to appear by tomorrow, but the company has informed investors of the upcoming bad news. Nokia revealed that its smartphone margins have gone down to 6.2 % in 2011, with of 16.4 % on basic Nokia phones.
Reuters quoted an anonymous saying that there aren't very huge losses per model but the scale across the portfolio has remained unseen. The high end offerings of Nokia have become so uncompetitive that the company will have to give them away. In the month of May, Nokia opined that operating margin will be less than its formerly expected range of 6 % to 9 %. This update is basically as a result of lower than previously expected net sales.
