The lawmakers of San Fransisco unanimously passed a legislation to help consumers reduce their exposure to cellphone radiation. This move was dubbed as 'unnecessary yet harmful' by the cellphone industry and the lawmakers called is a move that could 'save lives'.
This new legislation has revised a law that was passed last year, which was left virtually useless due to a suit that was filed by CTIA, the wireless telecommunications association. San Fransisco has become the first city in the U.S. to pass a legislation that pertains to cellphone radiation.
The original law needed the retailers to display the radiation level of each cellphone. On the other hand, the new law only requires the stores to give their customers, general information and tips to help them reduce exposure to radiation.
This change is expected to be helpful to the consumers, since according to experts, there is no reliable way to measure cellphone radiation. The exposure depends on factors like distance from the cellphone tower, battery life and the closeness of the phone to the body.
The San Fransisco officials believe that the new law is worth the trouble that it will cause to the industry, keeping in mind the possible health risks due to cellphone radiation.
